Father Joseph Thong Van Nguyen
The freedom to practice and share his Catholic faith has been central to the life of Father Joseph Thong Van Nguyen, who grew up in communist Vietnam, fled to the United States and was granted political asylum for challenging the regime’s persecution of the Catholic Church at the age of 26.
He credits St. John Paul for his priestly vocation for whom he had a deep devotion since he was a teenager. It was the Polish Pontiff’s admonition, “Do not be afraid,” he says, that had encouraged him to speak out in defense of human rights and religious liberty as a younger man in Communist Vietnam.
Father Nguyen grew up in a devout Catholic family in Vietnam, one of seven children. His family went to daily Mass and prayed the rosary together every night. Today his family is spread out across the world but his parents still live in Vietnam. Two brothers are priests, one brother is a seminarian and two other brothers and a sister are married.
When Thong Nguyen was in college, he helped establish a Catholic Student Association in Hanoi, and he and his friends went to Mass, attended Eucharistic Adoration and prayed the rosary together. After publishing an article about an incident when Vietnamese police had beaten hundreds of Catholics and arrested dozens of them, the communist security police arrested and tortured him for three days. Later, he escaped Vietnam to Thailand and then eventually to the United States.
After arriving in the United States, Thong continued attending daily Mass and praying the rosary and other Catholic devotions. He also wrote articles for newspapers and websites about religious persecution in Vietnam, and volunteered with a variety of human rights organizations to advocate for freedom of religion and against human trafficking. In 2017, he testified before a U.S. Congress subcommittee on human rights and participated in a White House discussion prior to the visit of a Vietnamese leader.
Father Nguyen, who has a degree in business administration, became a seminarian for the Archdiocese of Washington in 2017, first studying at the Saint John Paul II Seminary and later at Mount St. Mary’s Seminary in Emmitsburg. At the age of 38, he was ordained on June 15, 2024 for the Archdiocese of Washington. Today as the parochial vicar at Our Lady Star of the Sea Church in Solomons, Maryland, he is widely admired because of his joyful personality, deep faith and his evangelizing zeal.

ACTIVITIES
In Medjugorje
Some of the activities in Medjugorje:
-
Climb Apparition Hill: This is the site where the visionaries first encountered Our Lady. At the base stands a Blue Cross, marking the spot where Our Lady appeared to the children as they hid from the communist police during the early days of the apparitions. While ascending, participants are invited to pray the Rosary, taking breaks five times for each decade. At the summit, you will have time for personal prayer.
-
Climb Mt. Krizevac (Cross Mountain): In 1934, locals erected a 30-foot high cross on this mountain to honor Jesus’ passion and crucifixion. As you climb, the group will pray the Stations of the Cross, pausing fifteen times for each Station.
-
Apparitions: Each evening at 6 PM during the summer, the group joins villagers and fellow pilgrims to pray the Rosary, eagerly anticipating Our Lady's arrival to the visionaries. After the apparition at 6:40 PM, there is an International Mass followed by a Blessing of the Sick.
-
Adoration of the Blessed Sacrament: Our Lady encourages closeness to her Son. You can adore the Blessed Sacrament at the outdoor altar of St. James Church or inside the church itself. Adoration takes place on Tuesdays, Thursdays, and Saturdays. Additionally, Veneration of the Cross occurs on Fridays, and there is an Adoration Chapel on the St. James Church grounds open for afternoon adoration.
-
Meetings with the Visionaries: These gatherings are subject to their availability.
-
Prayer at the Statue of the Risen Christ: A bronze statue of the Risen Christ is situated on the grounds of St. James Church, where many pilgrims sit on nearby benches to pray in this serene setting. And much more...
